What are Flexo Labels?
Flexography is a printing process which uses a flexible relief plate that feels rubbery like a craft stamp. This flexible plate is wrapped around a printing cylinder and adhered with sticky tape. Flexo printing had its foundation in letterpress printing, and was developed to address the shortcomings of letterpress. It is much more versatile than letterpress in that it can be used for printing on almost any type of substrate, including plastic, metallic films, and many papers. Flexo is widely used for printing on the non-porous substrates required for various types of food packaging. It is also well suited for printing large areas of solid color. Flexo does well printing metallic inks, opaque whites, and flexo inks anchor well on a broad range of materials including polyester, polypropylene, flourescent labels, vinyl labels, and most coated papers.
Applications
Flexography has continued to grow in popularity for several decades. Flexo’s printability on a wide range of substrates has allowed it to spread into many industries. Food packaging is an important market because of the capability of flexography to print on non-porous substrates. This capability makes it useful for printing on plastic bags as well. Other common applications for flexography include newspapers, gift wrap, magazines, newspaper inserts, paperback books, telephone directories, and business forms. The packaging world has moved a significant amount of printing toward flexography including pressure-sensitive labels, tags, wrappers, pouches, shrink sleeves, flexible packaging, and folding cartons. Specialty applications such as magnets, static cling signs, and tattoos have also become popular media for flexo printing.
Advantages
Product on Rolls: High Speed application is required for many packaging components such as labels, coupons, and flexible packaging. State-of-the-Art packaging lines use high-speed labeling equipment that require product on rolls. Line speeds up to 500 parts-per-minute can be achieved with flexo-printed labels.
Printing Speed: Rolls of material, not sheets, are fed into the flexo printing press. By eliminating the handling of sheets presses can be run at higher line speeds. On set-up, flexography has a very low run waste level.
Combination Printing: With flexography’s roll-to-roll process, other printing processes may be placed in-line for combination printing. Rotary hot-stamp, embossing, screen printing and variable data printing can be accomplished with one pass.

Digital Printing has changed the game when it comes to personalization. At Custom Label, our digital press is able to print variable images including four-color process images – with a different image on every label! What can your imagination dream up? Need name tags for a High School Reunion? Why not have each label include the alumnus’ Name and graduation picture? Personalized wine labels for your daughter’s wedding? Why not give each guest a bottle with a picture of them with the Bride and Groom? The sky is the limit with Digital Printing!
The History of Barcodes
Did you know that barcode label technology has been around for nearly 60 years? Amazingly, a patent was filed in 1949 by two inventors for a system targeting “article classification … through the medium of identifying patterns”. Their concept incorporated thick and thin lines (like today’s standard codes) but arranged in concentric circles like a bulls-eye. It didn’t take long for the familiar rectanglar bar-code labels to develop and by 1970 the grocery industry had standardized the Universal Product Code (UPC). The two inventors would be amazed that 60 years later we are using a very similar design to their original concept!
Blank Labels
Diecut blank labels can be made of many materials, including matte litho, thermal transfer paper, or direct thermal paper. They are delivered as die-cut blanks on rolls. The customer then prints variable data (often on their manufacturing line), such as Lot Code, Expiration Date, or Tracking Numbers; often a combination of variable copy (product name, shipping address or information) and a barcode. The bar code label can be used for tracking, inventory control, and many other applications.
Consecutive Barcodes
Custom Label can provide you with pre-printed labels containing variable data, eliminating the need to variable print blank labels. Consecutive bar codes and corresponding human-readable copy can be printed with a “starting code” and an “ending code”, or using random or pre-determined cells from a spreadsheet or data file. Asset labels are an example of a variable label that can be generated using a spreadsheet of known copy and numbers.
Variable Artwork
Digital printing has changed the world of variable imaging. With our new HP Indigo WS4500 digital label press, Custom Label can vary the photos or artwork on a single print job. Imagine a roll of custom labels featuring an athletic team where each label was a different player! Let your imagination run wild! Our digital press uses no printing plates, so it is not limited to static artwork or information.

For half a century Folding Cartons have been run on large off-set litho presses on large sheets of board. That process was great if you wanted millions of cartons. But what if you only want 50? Just a few years ago, your options were limited. You either had to settle for low-quality hand-made carton “comps”, or pay for a full press set up on a large folding carton press. Now, digital label printing gives you an alternative. By applying a high quality printed label to a blank carton, you get the best of both worlds!
Custom Label Offers Digital Labels that can be applied to Folding Cartons
You can purchase your blank retail cartons from a variety of industrial supply companies. Custom Label will design a custom label dieline to ensure that your final package looks professional. The full color printing will look like an integrated part of the carton, not a sticker!

Matellization increases the opacity of the facestock. We have both paper and film stocks with metallization that can be used for cover-up or correction labels.
